Production Manager

Our client is leading international supplier of blueberry plants, genetic material and grower support to their global customer base. They have set up operations in the Paarl area and are seeking to appoint a Production Manager.

The incumbent will be responsible for the successful propagation, production and horticultural care of blueberry plants grown in the nurseries to meet the goal of producing brand compliant crops within the established budget.

Main responsibilities:

  • Management of plant production and horticultural care of crop including propagation, transplanting, growing, spacing, weeding, shearing, grading (quality control), packing, and disease monitoring and control
  • Oversees the successful implementation of the propagation and production plans for nurseries
  • Maintains inventory of production supplies and materials and ensures their safe and secure storage
  • Schedules and manages production labour needs
  • Employee management
  • Establishes relevant training programs
  • Collaborates with the Regional Director and Director of Production on developing and adhering to the annual budget
  • Health and safety management
  • Provides sales function with relevant information
  • Promotes collaboration and good communication between the production and sales departments
  • Coordinates the movement of product and materials between various locations
  • Assists with hosting customers, guests, events, and other visitors to the nurseries
  • Attends industry-related meetings and trade-shows as directed

 Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in horticulture or related area of plant sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires 5+ years’ experience as a grower, agronomy engineer or related position in a greenhouse setting (specific experience in blueberries or similar horticultural crop will be advantageous)
  • Minimum of 3+ years’ experience in a supervisory or management position with proven ability to manage, develop and mentor staff
  • General knowledge of hydroponics, plant tissue culture and conventional plant propagation techniques
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge and experience with SAP will be advantageous
  • Ability to develop clear action plans and drive processes with many inter-dependencies
  • Strong command of the English language
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Must have a commitment to quality
  • Must be results driven and customer focused
  • Ability to travel internationally for company business or attend events off-site
