Social Worker

Our client is an NGO, which aims to educate the general public on the effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy on the unborn baby, as well as the influence that people with FAS have on each individual in particular and the broader community in general.They are seeking to appoint a Social Worker (Early Intervention Services) on contract basis from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021. The incumbent will be rendering services in the Worcester and surrounding areas. 

Key Performance Areas:

Render services that prevent serious harm to individuals who have not become addicted yet and do not require formal treatment, aiming to reduce or eliminate risky and problematic substance abuse.

These services include:

  • Individual Intervention Outputs
  • Conducting the Intake
  • Screening the service user for risky substance use
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment; and
  • Ensure the development of a comprehensive Individual Development Plan/Treatment plan in consultation, with the service user
  • Ensure that there is adequate recording of individual and group interventions on a centralized casefile system
  • Additionally, the service should at least consist of:The implementation of motivational interviewing
  1. Implementation of the IDP goals
  2. Encouragement of family involvement (contracted family group sessions and/or family education sessions)
  3. Integration of service user into group work
  4. Referral to alternative treatment options if required
  5. Early intervention service will require a minimum of 6 individual sessions, exclusive of group involvement and family sessions.
  • Group Intervention Outputs
    • Groups consisting of, but not limited to
      • Early recovery skills and relapse prevention
  • Family Intervention Outputs
    • Family groups consisting of, but not limited to:
      • Educational programmes on facts about alcohol and drug abuse
      • Parenting skills
      • Facilitation of involvement in self-help groups 

Minimum requirements:

  • Minimum 1-year experience
  • A valid code B driving licence
  • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as Social Worker

  • Good communication (verbal and written) skills in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape
  • Proven computer literacy
  • Skills to challenge structural sources of poverty, inequality, oppression, discrimination and exclusion
  • The ability and competence to assist, develop, advocate for, and empower individuals, families, groups, organisations and communities to enhance their social functioning and their problem-solving capabilities

  • Good planning and organising skills
  • Presentation and facilitation skills
