  • LRA AMENDMENTS

    Early next year the Department of Labour will be amending the Labour Relations Act to provide for picketing by collective agreement or by determination by the CCMA in terms of picketing regulations.

    Furthermore, the legislative bill, which will be passed early in 2018, says that no picket in support of a protected strike or opposition to a lockout may take place, unless picketing rules are agreed to in a collective agreement or in a separate agreement.

  • NEW MINIMUM WAGES FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS

    The department of labour has released the sectoral determination for domestic workers, showing the new minimum wages for domestics across South Africa – at least until the national minimum wage comes into effect.

    According to the latest determination, domestic workers must get paid a minimum of R1,641 up to R2,545, depending on which area you live in. This is a 5% increase from 2017’s rates.

  • THE NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE BILL RELEASED FOR PUBLIC COMMENT

    On 17 November 2017, the National Minimum Wage Bill was gazetted for public comment. Given that the Bill was the subject of negotiation and agreement at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (“NEDLAC”), its progress through the legislative process is likely to be fairly smooth. The Bill envisages that it should be in force by 1 May 2018. We highlight its most important provisions below.
