Horticulturist
Our client is one of the major role players in the pome fruit industry. They are looking for a dynamic Horticulturist to join the Technical Department. This position will suit a self-driven, analytical, technology-oriented, and dynamic team player. The position will report directly to the Technical Manager and is based in Grabouw.
The successful candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Coordinating all new variety evaluations, selective technical field days for growers, field trials when needed, and general support for growers concerning orchard husbandry practices
- Carrying out preparatory tasks for the pack-shed and at times the execution of field trials on request by the Technical Manager
- Collecting and capturing pre- and post-harvest trial data accurately
- Assisting with annual administration and tasks, i.e., orchard census, crop estimation, maturity indexing, picking standards and additional tasks as required by the pack-shed
- Representing the company at industry events related to pre-harvest disciplines
Minimum requirements:
- A BSc Agriculture degree
- 3 – 5 years’ experience is mandatory
- Good knowledge in the field(s) of horticulture is essential and/or soil science and/or entomology
- Good observation and problem-solving skills, as well as decision-making abilities
- Ability to handle pressure
- Must be computer literate
- Must be willing to do fieldwork
- Willingness to work overtime
- Physically fit and healthy to perform the duties as required
- Good interpersonal skills (fluent in Afrikaans and English)
- Valid Driver’s license
