Area Manager – Farming

Our client in the Eastern Cape has a vacancy for an Area Manager in its farming division. This position will report directly to the Head of Production and will be responsible for overseeing the farming operations of roughly 380 hectares.

Key requirements for this position are:

  • 10 years’ experience in citrus farming
  • 3 years’ experience at an Area / Division manager level
  • IT literate
  • Ability to communicate in English and Afrikaans (verbal and written)

Key responsibilities for the position:

  • Achieve target production volumes, quality and specifications within the context of a top performing farm of the Sundays River Valley.
  • Manage all aspects of the production unit to optimize performance, supported by various group departments, guidelines and policies.
  • Responsible for the crop estimation process: liaise with farm managers to obtain all information, consolidate information and link with Supply Chain to convey information for planning purposes. Continuously update information as estimation changes.
  • Together with the relevant role players initiate; plan; coordinate and implement the
    • Fertilizer program
    • Irrigation program
    • Spray program
    • Prune program
  • Manage projects when appropriate
  • Harvesting plan – it is important that the Area Manager plays a strong leadership role to ensure that harvesting is happening as required. The Area Manager must also constantly liaise with supply chain and the pack house to ensure the coordination between harvesting, packing and shipping
  • Prepare, submit and manage the farming budget.
  • Promote best practices and technology to farm managers
  • Compliance responsibilities for example, HSE, audit requirements, etc.
  • Responsible for the farm maintenance plan
  • Set, implement and manage the Key Performance Indicators for his or her responsible area and team
