Wine Tourism Marketing Manager
Our client Vinpro, situated in Paarl, is the independent service organisation that provides specialist services to South African wine producers and represents them on various forums. They currently have an opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced individual to join their team as the Wine Tourism Marketing Manager.
The role of Wine Tourism Marketing Manager, for South Africa’s 22 wine routes and the SA Brandy Homes, supports the strategic direction of the wine industry by giving its members greater access to the local and global market.
This high-level role will see the incumbent drive the development and implementation of an industry strategy for wine tourism for the next five years. The marketing strategy will include a product and promotion focus and this will be reflected in the key performance indicators for the role and the incumbent’s daily activities.
Main duties:
- Act as a central reference point and resource for wine tourism in South Africa – the go-to person representing South African wine tourism
- Ongoing communication with stakeholders including government (national, provincial, local), industry bodies, wine routes and wineries, as well as tourism bodies, such as SA Tourism, the TBCSA and SATSA
- Share business development best practices for wineries in partnership with wine route managers
- Maintain the Wine Tourism Toolkit, a digital resource designed for business development, and increase member registrations
- Facilitate wine tourism workshops to ensure that wineries are market-ready, developing high quality visitor experiences and optimising the tasting room as DTC sales channel to improve profitability
- Represent and promote wine tourism at international and local tourism events and shows Leverage the funding available for this from government bodies
- Represent and promote wine tourism at local and international wine shows in partnership with Wines of South Africa abroad ,and event organisers locally
- Maintain and keep the Visit Winelands website updated and grow the reach and engagement of the Visit Winelands social media platforms as set out in the digital strategy
- Develop a funding mechanism to ensure the website is financially sustainable
- Conceptualise, co-fund and implement marketing campaigns that drive awareness and conversion of South African wine tourism experiences
- Develop marketing initiatives that encourages low season visitation and drives regional dispersal to smaller or lesser-known wine routes
- Plan new research-based cooperative advertising initiatives that will increase leisure and business travel market share
- Develop relationships with national, international and regional tourism-based publications and writers, tours operators and travel agents
- Participate in radio talk shows; provide current and updated information to the press
- Develop a wine tourism marketing kit to encourage the promotion of South African wine tourism and inclusion in articles and tour operator itineraries
- Market research. Collect, analyse and disseminate research data on visitors and wine tourism performance in alignment with Wesgro and SAWIS
- Attend meetings, seminars, conventions, and workshops to further knowledge, stay informed of changes in the tourism industry, and exchange information
- Prepare and deliver presentations to both the wine industry and stakeholders on wine tourism
Qualification and Experience:
- A minimum 5 years’ marketing experience, with at least 2 years’ experience in tourism destination marketing
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in tourism management, marketing or business administration
- Experience at managerial/professional level
- Project management experience – proven track record of strategy implementation
- International exposure
- Good wine knowledge
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Media and public relations savvy
- Digitally savvy (databases, social media, Mailchimp etc.)
- Analytical and intellectually curious
- Flexible, self-starter and creative
