Crippling strike actions persist at a South African fruit packing operation where management claim intimidation tactics and ‘militant’ attitudes are preventing some people from returning to work.

Despite ongoing negotiations since the end of July between major pome fruit packing plant Ceres Fruit Growers (CFG) and the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), no agreement has been reached and strikes continue.

The Commercial, Stevedoring, Agricultural and Allied Workers union (Csaawu) announced today that it will not be forced to close down.

The union faced bankruptcy after two Labour Court judgements in 2014 that awarded costs against the farmworkers and the union. This debt amounted to nearly R600,000.

The government has officially opened up its own employment agency to help jobless people find work. Called the Public Employment Service, the agency will have desks in labour department offices countrywide, which will enable jobseekers to apply for jobs in both the public and private sector.

Seafield replaces Les Kettledas, who went into retirement last year. Before assuming the position the incumbent was chief director: Statutory and Advocacy Services in the Department of Labour.

The earnings threshold published in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) is currently R205,433.30 per annum.
